More than one hundred buildings, located within the Galle Fort, have been purchased by foreigners, increasing the value of one perch to Rs 22 million, the Galle Heritage Foundation said.

With this development, the population within the fort, which used to be around three thousand, has decreased to around 1000.

According to the foundation, some foreigners who have purchased property are facing many problems due to the fraudulent sale of the land and buildings by brokers.

It was also said that due to the high price of one perch in Galle Fort, there is a decrease in the arrival of new investors.

An official of the foundation said that there are about 450 buildings in the fort that are run by government institutions, and more than 100 of them have been purchased by foreigners to run tourism business.

These buildings are of archaeological value belonging to the Dutch and English eras. (Unawatuna D.G Sugathapala)

I wonder if this area become a foreign colony soon.. I don't mind if they come and buy but our people too have to buy some side by side to protect our culture and customs ..think about the consequences in a long run

It should be forbidden for Europeans to buy land in sri lanka. European race always stealing land and they will colonize again.. Only allow buy for sri lankan originals only. Have to be born on in sri lanka to buy land. If we let non sri Lankans to buy land and houses...we will not have anything soon.

Lankans must remember that only good things working in SL are made by foreigners and without them SL peoples are stil living collecting banana snd coconuts. So remember it before be so racist

These buildings should not be looked upon with glory because they don’t represent anything positive to the Sri Lankans. They are a leftover legacy of being invaded and conquered by “White Aliens” who came from thousands of miles away , killed our ancestors and our kings, destroyed our civilisations, and converted a portion of our people to their religion and thus leaving a permanent disharmony even after they had left.

    Fazlan Friday, 09 June 2023 12:38 PM

I think its really good to get investors from outside investing in the country

THAT IS THE MAIN REASON WHY THAT BUGGER IS CALLED "VIKKAMA SINNA"

Most of these comments are xenophobic. If these foreigners hadn't bought so many properties in Galle Fort and renovated them according to UNESCO regulations, Galle Fort would be one big ruin. It is true that some European countries have appropriated colonies or stolen the land from their inhabitants. But what about today. Foreigners who buy land here and build companies or hotels and houses are a boon for the country from which the locals benefit. In contrast, lands are stolen or cheated between Sri Lankans on a daily basis. Most court cases are over land disputes. This is part of the glorious customs and culture of Sri Lanka. Where would Sri Lanka be today without foreign investors, without foreign tourists? But many Sri Lankans only love tourists if they only stay for 2 weeks in which they can be nicely groomed. Many people in Sri Lanka need to change their attitude towards foreigners, need to become more cosmopolitan and liberal.

Services provided (food and beverages) within the Fort is beyond the reach of ordinary Sri Lankans. Don't have to worry about the Real Estate prices

Remember back in 1950 the tallest building in Fort was The Times of Ceylon Ltd, bought from the British by Mr A Sangarapillai, the the racist politicians nationalised it virtullay plundered it. Rajapakses were responsible for selling the country to the foreigners. They are all above the law under own stupid democracy.

So 100% tax for the foreigners investment against 10% tax for local investors are a favour from president to the foreigners? Why comment if don t know the situation or have some problem with mathematics?

Mohammed intiquab Ghouse Saturday, 10 June 2023 05:31 PM

The foreigners pay a hefty price for run down buildings, we should be thankful that they preserve and give employment for locals, the advertisements abroad of boutique hotels.
