President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday said the voter turnout of 71% at the General Election, reflected the confidence that Sri Lankans have in the government’s efforts to control the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am glad to know that today’s all-island voter turnout was nearly 71%. As the first South Asian country to hold general elections amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, it reflects the confidence that the people have in our efforts to control this pandemic,” the president tweeted this evening.

President Rajapaksa cast his vote for the General Election 2020 at Sri Vivekaramaya Temple in Pangiriwatta, Nugegoda this morning. First Lady Ayoma Rajapaksa also cast her vote.

Earlier today, the President requested voters to cast their votes without any fear of the COVID-19 pandemic saying that activities at all polling centres have been arranged in line with the guidelines issued by the health authorities. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

So, what you are saying is that you targeted protecting the people from the COVID19 pandemic with the intention of earning an extra mileage for your election campaign? I guess that will be your slogan right along like your brother using the war victory to rob the country.

I think you don't have any love for the mother land why don't you wait for the people to cast the vote. Srilanka people are not baby's.

Uncle, it is too early to come to conclusions as to why 71% voted. I will be able to get a better and more logical answer tomorrow when the results are out.

You and your war-criminal generals have failed miserably in combating the crisis, both in the health and economic sectors.

@ cyril john. I think having love for the motherland does not mean having love for the Rajapaksa felons.

How do you know that 71% of voters are in favour of your govt ? Something fishy.

    BuffaloaCitizen Thursday, 06 August 2020 09:02 AM

Yes, that is the same percentage of stupidity in this country... otherwise why are we in this bankrupt State after obtaining a magnificent blooming country in 1948.
