More complaints surface against SL cricketers during Australia tour

A 3-member investigation panel consisting of Justice Sisira Ratnayake (retired high court judge) has been appointed to initiate an inquiry into the alleged incident involving player Danushka Gunathilaka and other complaints which seem to have come to light against some other players, the Daily Mirror learns.

Attorney-at-Law Niroshana Perera and Asela Rekawa were appointed as the members of the panel.

The Sri Lanka Cricket in a statement said the committee will focus on the inquiry of various alleged incidents that have come to the attention of Sri Lanka Cricket that is said to have allegedly taken place during the national team's stay in Australia including the allegations against Danushka Gunathilaka.

The panel in this process will call for an immediate explanation from the Team Manager pertaining to his conduct, with references to the occurrence of all such incidents.

Upon submission of the said report by the Panel, the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket will take stern disciplinary action against the players and or officials if proven any wrongdoing or negligence when carrying out the official duties, the SLC said.

Meanwhile, in the wake of the alleged sexual charges against player Danushka Gunathilaka, Sports Ministry Secretary Dr. Amal Harshada Silva said that the Sports Ministry has received several complaints about various alleged incidents involving other players as well during their stay in Australia. SLC should wait for the Australian court outcome before bringing further allegations on him. If SLC wants to support him, hire a Barrister to defend the case. Refusing bail to be taken seriously and instructing lawyer requires assistance thro a Barrister. Why did SLC reduced the one year ban to six months on three players which included Dhanushka?

The Secretary of Sports and Youth Affairs is responsible for poor performance and lack of discipline because he has not taken any action against SLC for not taking appropriate action when cricketers break rules and also for SLC increasing the number of First Division Teams to 22 thus lowering the standard of domestic cricket when all other countries have 6-12 such teams. Very embarrassing for a civilised nation, when it’s sports personal commits unlawful activities. It is more embarrassing when such are committed on foreign soil. All nations face such, but Sri Lanka stands out in recent years, due to frequency of these breaches in ‘codes of conduct ‘. Responsibility for player behaviour is expected largely to be that of the officials as well. Their role is to protect the reputation and keep to code of conduct of players. In this instance, it appears team officials have failed miserably on their duties. Anyone accused of a wrongdoing, must be provided with legal representation. We are not certain how much of that, the accused player has received. In future, bearing responsibilities on all departments highlighted as failures with this incident would be the way forward to build a reputation.
