A 16-year-old girl who was hospitalized with burn injuries while working as a domestic helper at the house of former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen in Borella has died at the Colombo National Hospital today, Police said.

They said the girl, a resident of Hatton Dayagama Estate, had reportedly set herself on fire and was admitted to Hospital last week with burn injuries.

The Borella Police said that her parents brought her to the former minister's house a few months ago.

It was reported that she was staying in a room next to the kitchen when police found a bottle of kerosene and a lighter in the room.

She came out of the room while her clothes were on fire, and another domestic helper and several others at the house along with Bathiudeen's wife covered her with a wet blanket and rushed her to hospital.

The Borella Police as well as the Government Analyst have gone to the house and inspected the place where the incident took place.

The Police have recorded statements from the residents of the house over the incident and the Borella Police is conducting further investigations.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

Only heartless people would employ young children as domestic helps in their houses. Will they ever like their children to be in such situations.

    Sepala Thursday, 15 July 2021 09:09 PM

What if the child, the child's parents' or guardian consent to their children working to supplement income? If not, do they starve to death?

    Raj Thursday, 15 July 2021 10:36 PM

A nonsense reply by Sepala! There is excuse of employing a child. It is our culture that the guardian has to do anything to protect their child. Poor girl, may her find her much needed rest in peace.

Child abuse. Actual age may even be younger. What kind of animals would take child out of school to work?

Sick heartless Thursday, 15 July 2021 09:34 PM

    So sad to employ children

    Seqi Thursday, 15 July 2021 09:45 PM

Child slavery is as child abuse is in this wonderful land of ours..... have these people no shame...... Clearly the child had been made to feel shame. Sri Lanka little different to Saudi Arabia in many ways.

    Sepala Thursday, 15 July 2021 10:08 PM

Says why this man wanted to go home so badly.

    Ralaharamy Friday, 16 July 2021 06:54 AM

Yes. People may think you have gone bonkers. But I really admire your imagination, specially tying up with Rishard in isolation for a long period. You are great Sepala!

    Raja Thursday, 15 July 2021 10:31 PM

Should be investigated in view of child abuse including sexual!

    Maria Thursday, 15 July 2021 10:45 PM

You would expect a parliamentarian to not employ children. Often people employ young defenseless children as they can pay them with a penny and in some cases exploit them.. I wonder if sexual exploitation led to the 16 year old child's suicide.

    DHA Thursday, 15 July 2021 10:45 PM

Sadly our up country politicians are still eating away the funds allocated for these poor people ! It's so sad so much of poor people who are struggling employ their loved ones instead of sending them to school !

    Seb Thursday, 15 July 2021 10:46 PM

If he felt sorry for the girl, he could have financially supported her so she could have stayed in school.

OK Sspala It is better for the parents to starve to death than sell your child for a life in slavery

    Nizam Friday, 16 July 2021 06:20 AM

Give Bathiudeen life sentence. Minimum 20 years RI.

    Sam Friday, 16 July 2021 06:27 AM

I agree that it is very young but you are all talking about child slavery when the legal age of employment is 16. This was recently changed to 16 from 14. Not saying it right just pointing out the law.

    Arnold Friday, 16 July 2021 06:32 AM

Website of International Labor Organization states: Though the minimum age for employment is 14 in Sri Lanka, workers are not allowed to join unions until the age of 16. Anyway sad to see Lankans looking at everything from the wrong side. The main culprit is the guardian of the girl who made her work instead of caring for her and sending her to school.

    Kumar Friday, 16 July 2021 06:47 AM

In order to get a big kerosene fire going, need lot of effort. I wonder what a minister's home people were doing with kerosene. Last time I recall getting for our home in Colombo was in late early70s.

    concerned Friday, 16 July 2021 07:05 AM

First of all the employer must be charged for child labouring. Those poor estate people have no choice than sending their wives to Arab countries and handing over their under age girls trusting the broker and high society employers like Bathiudeen. Finally these innocent children will be used not only for sex. Finally they will be converted into other religions. Anyway this innocent child is dead and gone. As usually Bathiudeen will escape as usual

    Arnold Friday, 16 July 2021 09:01 AM

@concerned. The main culprit is the parent or guardian who took the girl to work as a domestic servant. He should have worked harder, and supported her instead of sending her to work.

    Kandy Friday, 16 July 2021 09:54 AM

All are talking about child labour

Rishad as a Minister has had to be an example to the country. But here he is suspected of terrorism

    vithura Friday, 16 July 2021 01:13 PM

Something doesn't sound right, hopefully the police would get to the bottom of it!

    Surprise Friday, 16 July 2021 03:21 PM

Check how ministers are employing under age children.

    vince Friday, 16 July 2021 08:31 PM

A lot of cruel politicians will be ditching their (servants) I meant life assistants (because without them they could not really get on with their lives).

    Sujeevan Saturday, 17 July 2021 12:20 AM

I hope the relevant people will investigate fairly and find actual reason behind this cruel incident. Innocent child Finds justice.
