Over 2,000 athletes for Junior Nationals

Over 2,000 athletes including overseas competitors are set to participate in the 64th Junior National Athletic Championships 2024 from July 13 to 16 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex in Diyagama.

20 athletes from the Maldives will compete in the Junior National Athletic Championships, which will be conducted in four different age group categories – Under-16, Under-18, Under-20 and Under-23 for Boys and Girls in 3436 events.

The Under-16 age group will include 454 Boys’ and 353 Girls’, the Under-18 age group will consist of 347 Boys and 214 Girls, the Under-20 age group will include 284 Boys and 134 Girls and the Under-23 age group will consist of 159 Boys’ and 84 Girls’.

This meet will also serve as a selection trial to pick the Sri Lanka Athletic Team for the World Junior Under-20 Athletic Championships 2024, held from August 27 to 31 in Lima, Peru, Sri Lanka Athletic (SLA) sources revealed yesterday.  

At least seven athletes have already reached the qualifying standards for the World Junior Athletic Championships and a further three or four athletes are set to join the line-up after the junior nationals, according to SLA sources.  
SLA will conduct the junior nationals for Rs. 3m as no sponsor has come forward to support the event.
