To check this claim, FactCheck.lk consulted import data from the Export Development Board Trade Statistics. FactCheck.lk looked at the totals for the HS codes 8701 to 8716, “Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling-stock, and parts and accessories thereof” category, and excluded HS 8706 to 8709 and 8712 to 8716 (all non-motorised vehicles and parts subcategories) to calculate the totals that are relevant to the state minister’s claim.
According to the data, a total of 2,631,612 vehicles were imported from 2015 to 2019. The total value of imports during the same period amounted to LKR 1,239.7 billion. These figures align closely with the state minister’s claim.

With the nation carrying such a huge debt every year ,how in the world can we afford such luxury. Rackets in ministries on car pools or in the issue of permits to those who are not eligible.?

What about publishing import data prior to 2015? including permit vehicles for all parliamentarians and other government servants? .

So what's the problem? Why do people study hard and work hard? Why should they do it if they cannot spend the money on some luxury? Are only dumb politicians entitled to luxury? Are you surprised that many wish to get out of this politician created dump even in a leaking boat?

Excellent . Were you not listed as a recipient of 1 or more of the 277 vehicles that were to be imported. So austerity for the many and prosperity for 225 . How will efficiency increase when greater luxury is given as these guys will fall a sleep in comfort. Admit this is daylight robbery.
