The Ministry of Sports has decided to form 25 District level football pools. Sports Minister, Namal Rajapaksa has directed 25 outstanding players from each District to be selected for the training pool from competitions conducted by District Football Leagues.
This initiative is part of the Sports Ministry’s District Development Programme for football. The talent identified from each District would be included in the National Pool of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) with all facilities being provided by the Sports Ministry.
The first phase of this project is the Hambantota District Football League (HFL) which began on Sunday at the D. A. Rajapaksa Grounds in Beliatta. This tournament will continue until February 28. The Sports Ministry has directed League Football Tournaments to be held in each District as part of the District Sports Development Programme. After the completion of the District League Tournament, the Sports Ministry and the FFSL hope to launch the Ceylon Football League (CFL).
