A massive fraud involving Rs. 240 million in the Kandy Municipal Council has come to light.
Member of the Municipal Council Mohamed Muthalif (NPP) told the media that a former Municipal Commissioner, and two engineers responsible for the water supply scheme from Kandy to Katugastota were involved in the fraud. He said a project had been undertaken by a leading construction company and that corruption and malpractice prevailed in the entire project from the tender procedure to the construction works. He said that Rs. 140 million has already been paid to the construction company, and the final payment of Rs. 110 million has been suspended.
He said the council would take up the issue at a special meeting soon.
