Several roads in Colombo, Central Province inundated

Roads in Colombo City and in the Central Province were underwater as a result of very heavy rainfall yesterday .The roads in Colombo city remain submerged by the rainwater. Ward Place, Nandadasa Kodagoda Mawatha in Borella, Town Hall and Thummulla are areas that remained inundated yesterday. The water level in Nandadasa Kodagoda Mawatha was around two feet and in the area around Colombo Town Hall one foot. 

Traffic blocks were witnessed in several areas in Colombo during showers.


People who had come for treatment in Colombo National Hospital and Castle Hospital in Rajagiriya were seen packed confined to the bus halts being unable to move out for hours due to torrential rain.


The Nuwara Eliya Hatton Road and Colombo Hatton Road were also underwater. Vehicle movement was obstructed along these roads. High winds and heavy mists were also visible in these areas.


The highest rainfall of 94.1 mm was recorded in Colombo city yesterday while rainfall of 64mm was recorded in Shalawa, Hanwella, 61 mm of rain was recorded from Pasyala and 85 mm of rain from Kegalle.


The Department of Meteorology said the heavy showers were caused by the southwest monsoon which has become active over the island. Heavy showers above 100 mm are expected at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara Districts during the coming days according to the Department of Meteorology.
