Lives of the people who died in the Kinniya tragedy would have been saved if the present government continued the project which our government started, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said yesterday.

He said this during a protest which was organized by the UNP in Warakapola last evening. “A number of people were killed in Kinniya on Tuesday. It was during our government that the foundation was laid to build the bridge there. This government had failed to continue this project. Our government started a number of projects. However, this government had not continued any of them.

We are happy on the other hand as this government has opened the new Kelani Bridge, which our government began constructing during our regime,” Mr. Wijewardene said.
“Essential items such as gas and milk food are hardly available today. There is an enormous burden on the people. Government is making the people suffer. We don’t want such a government. The UNP is ready to form a government,” he added.

Former MP Sandith Samarasinghe who also participated in the protest said UNP will hold protests in all nine constituencies in the Kegalle District in the coming days. “We will strengthen our party and will work towards forming a government that will ensure the wellbeing of the people,” he said.
