Red alert issued for strong winds : dept of Meteorology

A red alert on gusty winds has been issued for 16 districts, the Department of Meteorology said yesterday . The Department said strong winds could be experienced due to the active south-west monsoon conditions over the country. Fairly strong gusts of winds up to 40-50 km/h and could be expected to gather speed up to 60 km/h on the western slopes of the central hills, in the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and in the Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.

Sixteen districts, including Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Kurunegala, Kegalle, Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Ratnapura, Galle, Matara, and Hambantota, have been alerted about the weather conditions.  People living in the above areas are cautioned to be vigilant in this regard.
