Naval Cardiologist arrested for sexual abuse of teenage girl, suspended from service

  • Navy to conduct a separate internal investigation into the incident

The Cardiologist, a Lieutenant Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy who was arrested for sexually exploiting a 15-year old girl from Mount Lavinia, has been suspended from service by the Navy Commander.  

Navy Spokesman Captain Indika de Silva said that Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne, suspended the services of the officer with effect from Wednesday (7).  


He said the service of the naval surgeon was suspended in support of the further investigations and judicial proceedings in connection with this incident.  Further, the Navy said that they will conduct a separate internal investigation into the incident at the behest of the Commander of the Navy.  


The officer, a resident of Bandaragama was arrested on Monday and was remanded till July 19.
