Inter-Parliamentary Union seeks leave for internal observer follow Bathiudeen’s FR

• Secretary-General of IPU believes that arrangements would be made to follow the proceedings online

The Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has sought Supreme Court Registrar’s leave for an international observer representing the IPU to follow remotely the hearing on the Fundamental Rights petition filed on behalf of former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, to be taken up before Supreme Court on July 8. 

In a letter addressed to the registrar of Supreme Court (Sri Lanka), Martin Chungong the Secretary-General of IPU believes that arrangements would be made to follow the proceedings online. “The Committee, to which the case of Mr. Bathiudeen was submitted, respectfully requests that leave is granted for its observer, Barrister Mark Trowell QC from Australia, to follow the hearing remotely. I would be grateful for your assistance in this matter and for informing us at your earliest convenience how Mr. Trowell can connect himself to the court proceedings,” IPU Secretary General said. The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is the world organisation of national parliaments of sovereign States, to which the Parliament of Sri Lanka is affiliated.
