The Department of Animal Production and Health cleared the stock of imported eggs since the tests conducted for bird flu and Newcastle flu proved negative, an official said.

The government, through the State Trading Company, took steps to import eggs from Tamil Nadu, India following a shortage in the local market. The egg prices soared in the local market as a result.  Department’s Director Dr. Hemali Kothalawala told Daily Mirror that two tests were done at the Veterinary Research Institute to detect viruses of bird flu and Newcastle disease, and the stock was proven risk free.

Further research was conducted by the Medical Research Institute.

The imported eggs will be released for manufacturing bakery items such as cakes.
