Former Colombo Municipal Councillor Mahinda Kahandagama was among those who were beaten by protesters on May 9 last year. He said he was performing an act when he was being beaten up in the pursuit of survival and gaining sympathy.

Expressing his sentiments on the remembrance of May 9 last year, when peaceful protestors were attacked, he said he was thankful to the Aragalaya for making him a political leader.
“Now, I don’t need any publicity as I have become so famous due to what transpired in the aftermath of the Aragalaya,” Kahandagama said.

Commenting on the Aragalaya, Kahandagama highlighted that it was a conspiracy and the activists were oblivious to it.

Moreover, he said he was so used to bathing in the Beira Lake and it was not something new to him.
