Heavy rains wreak havoc in the central hills

Heavy rain experienced on the western slopes of the central hills at present has resulted in a disastrous situation disrupting civilian life in several areas.  

Nuwara Eliya District Asst. Director, Disaster Management Ranjith Alahakoon said about five families had been displaced by floods due to the overflow of the Devon canal and several houses in the Rozella estate in Watawala had gone under water. Norton Bridge, Wimalasurendra, Laxapana and Canyon hydropower reservoirs had been spilling over by last morning and three spill gates in the Laxapana reservoir and two in Canyon reservoir opened.   
The Ginigathhena- Norton Bridge – Maskeliya main road had been obstructed by an earth slip at Maussakele estate bringing traffic to a stand still from last mornng. Norton Bridge police had taken steps to divert traffic through the Hatton- Norwood road.   


 The disaster management centre warned drivers to be cautious of possible earth slips when using the Hatton- Nuwara Eliya road and the Hatton-Colombo road.
