The Government should not hesitate to reverse the decisions it had made with regard to fertilizer and thus avoid a famine which had already begun to emerge, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said yesterday.

Mr. Wijewardene told some party activists that resolving the crisis with regard to fertilizer is urgent as the famine has already started to emerge with farmers deciding to stay away from the fields.

“Farmers have already decided not to direct water into their paddy fields as per their stand to stay away from cultivation. Also, we request the Ministers to go and see for themselves the ground situation. There are shortages of essential goods. Therefore, it is time to reverse the decisions which the government has made when it comes to the agriculture sector,” Mr. Wijewardene said.

“One should be humble enough to reverse the decisions that have already been made with regard to agriculture for the sake of the nation. We warned of a new wave of COVID-19 last year, and it came true. Likewise, we predict that there would be a famine soon and therefore we urge the government to take urgent steps and reverse the decisions it had made on agriculture,” he added.
