Security has been beefed up at the Bandaranaike and Mattala Airports after a threatening e-mail was received over a possible attack, a senior official told Daily Mirror.

However, following an immediate probe, it was later declared as a false alarm.
Although the information received had been unconfirmed and most likely to be a false one, security at the airports had been beefed up as a precautionary measure, sources confirmed.

It was reported that the Civil Aviation Authority had informed the authorities to tighten security following the unconfirmed e-mail, which had been originated from an Asian country four days ago. According to initial investigations, the sender of the e-mail had warned that there would be an attack on the airport if the authorities failed to release four of their members. However, the e-mail had not mentioned any names of the four persons. “Following in- depth investigations, we have found it was just a false alarm,” he said.
