CC endorses President’s nominees to key judicial positions

• The deadline to submit applications is February 15, 2023

 The Constitutional Council approved the recommendation of President Ranil Wickremesinghe to appoint President of the Court of Appeal K.P. Fernando as a Judge of the Supreme Court filling the vacancy which fell after the retirement of Judge L. T. B. Dehideniya, a statement from the Parliamentary Media Unit said.   

The statement said the Constitutional Council unanimously approved the nomination of N. B. P. D. S. Karunarathna, Judge of the Court of Appeal to be appointed as the President of the Court of Appeal, and the nomination of M.A.R. Marikkar, High Court Judge to be appointed as a Judge of the Court of Appeal to the resultant vacancies. 

 
The Constitutional Council also decided to publish the advertisement on newspapers of February 1, 2023, calling for applications for the appointment as Members of the Independent Commissions specified in Schedule to Article 41B of the Constitution.   

Draft format of the application would be published on the Official Parliament website. The deadline to submit applications is February 15, 2023.  

The Constitutional Council met yesterday presided with Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena in the chair.   

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Sajith Premadasa, Leader of the Opposition, MPs Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, Sagara Kariyawasam and civil society representatives Dr. Prathap Ramanujam, Dr. (Mrs) Dilkushi Anula Wijesundere, Dr. (Mrs) Dinesha Samararatne were present at the meeting. MP Kabir Hashim informed his inability to attend this meeting.
