Mr Lakmal Ratnayake - Director - SriLankan Airlines Ltd

Mr. Lakmal Ratnayake has been appointed as Director – SriLankan Airlines Ltd. Mr Ratnayake is an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka and an Independent legal practitioner and Counsel in civil & criminal matters who is in practice for 20 years. He hails from Kurunegala and is an old boy of St Annes College, Kurunegala and St. Josephs College, Colombo.

Mr. Ratnayake has held number of positions in government corporations and statutory bodies and has immense experience in general administration, public relations, expertise in procurement and financial management procedures, labour management, recruitment, and management of personnel in the government sector.

He represented Sri Lanka at the International Cooperative Alliance General Assemblies in many countries and has previously held the posts of Chairman of the NICD, CWE, SLPMCS, Director at the Ports Authority, Board Member of HIPS, Lanka Coal Company, CICT and HIPG. He is also the Chairman of the JCT Limited, a subsidiary of the Ports Authority.

Being a lawyer is not the qualification for an international carrier. Should be a person from one of the most successful business community with a wide range of marketing experience and a clear vision. They should be able to look at this white elephant from a different angle. Extensive cutting and chopping is badly required to make this a viable business. instead of going global without a proper planning is the root cause of this place. These are political appointments and cannot expect from from such people.

Every Director thinks that the director post is a flowery job. No they should think deeply of efficiency, profitability,good management, and fair play not to allow high ups to disrupt your plan and to have the guts to say no to the high politicians and security guys who wants to have free rides which is happening for years. Hope the new director will be able to stand up to these bullies.

Since 1977 appointing right person at the right post on merit and experience in the relevant field was changed and personal and political affiliations became the sole criterion. This country will remain the same even after 2040 if this corrupt system continues.

Unfortunate that most of the comments, quite correctly decry political stooges being appointed to Top, overpaid posts during our Financial mess. But spare a thought for the excellent Air Hostesses and groundstaff. I've used at least 20 airlines, and Air Lanka"s staff are the BEST!
