Most people are going through life on the fast tract. The rush seems to start from the time we wake up in the morning to even late at night. We need to become aware that our bodies are not programmed to go at the hectic pace they are going at. The consequences would be a breakdown caused by stress, in trying to cope with the pressure of daily living. Is that not why people take a vacation?
It is a proven fact the anxieties of life cause psychological damage that even affects the body. Taking a holiday or going on vacation seems to be only a fantasy in most people’s lives.
We are suggesting probably a better way. We could imagine retiring to a quiet place at home, to give ourselves the gift of solitude or meditation. This could become a time when we are able to see things as they really are. Solitude or meditation is not possible while watching TV which most families have enthroned as a deity. The solitude we refer to is to stop doing what we are and spend time with family. It’s not about telling our children, “we are tired after work, don’t disturb and come later.” That ‘later’ may never come. The child goes elsewhere in search of attention and love. Probably discovers it in the dark world of lust and licentiousness. Reaching adulthood, that child may confess it never knew its parents, and thus be unable to give appreciation and love in our old age.
We enter that quiet place with family to look retrospectively at the struggles and failures that had given way to new found freedom and fulfillment. This contemplation of the past would give new impetus and hope to face the future; whatever the uncertainties. Here lies the opportunity for family to make individual and collective decisions together. Taking stock of where we are going will surely enrich the family. Having no long term goals or purpose, will be like a ship without the rudder, tossed in the tempest of circumstances.
Not having this daily vacation with family at home will deprive us of not knowing our children and them of us. We will go through life not appreciating the richness and value of each other. And when that happens, we will not appreciate even those in the outside world. No wonder relationships in marriage and the corporate world constantly break down. Humanity has become selfish and self centred. Maybe we are too frightened or stressed to interact with family; take a break and discover what we are not so as to become what we ought to be.
