The recent survey has revealed that the constant derailments in the upcountry mainline between Badulla and Bandarawela is due to the flow of water into the railway line.
A senior official of the Railway Department in Nanu-oya said a mechanism would be worked out to prevent oozing of mud and water into the track bed.
He said waste water from the unauthorized settlements drained into the railway line while the side drains had been obstructed by unauthorized erections and cultivation. The official pointed out that the railway line went under water quite often.
He said the obstructions would be cleared with heavy duty machinery under the supervision of Railway Supervisory Manager in Bandarawela H.D. Perera.
