A Sri Lankan athlete and a senior official have gone missing after the fifth day's events of the 22nd Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England on Tuesday.

Initial reports indicate that a female judoka and the manager of the Sri Lanka Judo Team  have disappeared from the Sri Lankan camp soon after she lost her first-round event on Monday.

The Sri Lankan Team Management have immediately informed the relevant authorities about their disappearance and the Birmingham Metropolitan Police have started a special inquiry into the incident.

As a result, the Chef-de-Mission of the Sri Lankan contingent Maj. Gen (retired ) Dampath Fernando told  that he has decided to acquire all passports of the Sri Lankan contingent to avoid further disappearances.

Sri Lanka are fielding a 110-member strong contingent and 51 officials for the Commonwealth Games with the Judo Team consisting of three Men and two Women.

All Sri Lankan athletes and officials have been granted a 180-day Visa for the Commonwealth Games.

Why send a contigent of 100 athletes and 50 officials, when the country is without dollars? Still abuse on the march. Sports Minister is responsible for this.

For sure all these people are on sponsored expenses. They should be named and shamed. In this case it would have been a 'pre arranged affair '!

Why so many officials? What a waste of public funds this disaster moment?. Sri Lanka still not learn lesson....

Selfish Sri Lankans are ruining the reputation for all other Sri Lankans. There should be new laws to jail the parents spouse children and siblings of state guaranteed country reps who go missing. Alternatively share there addresses in SRi Lanka so that the citizens will do an aragalaya in front of their housed until they "come home"

it is a very big thing for some government officials a free foreign trip. They go there and make idiots of themselves.

When the former President of the country Gota Rajapaksa himself has run away from the country and taken rufuge in Singapore fearing for his life there is no reason why these athletes cannot go missing seeking greener pastures in Britain when they are not happy with their current status.

DesperationKnowsNoBoundries What can one expect when the situation is this bad. I bet those speaking out would have done exactly the same if they got the change. Why send that many officials ratio makes no sense, waste of tax payers money, could have used that money to feed the poor in the country.

This is not the first time. It has happened earlier too. They seek asylum there and look forward to a better life than in this bankrupt paradise isle ridden with political corruption and nepotism with no prospects for advancement in the future unless you are politically aligned to the party in power. Wish good luck to those missing!
