The decision to increase fuel prices was a decision taken by the Cost of Living Committee, not a personal decision by the Minister, Udaya Gammanpila. Therefore, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has decided not to support the opposition's no-confidence motion against the minister, Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.
Addressing the media, he said the Cost of Living Committee's decision was finally endorsed by the cabinet ministers and Minister Gammanpila personally announced such a decision but was not responsible for making such a decision.
"The people in the country are in a big crisis at the moment. Some have no income. All sources of generating income have ceased due to the COVID epidemic. But the government is also in a difficult situation at the moment. Especially given the current dollar deficit. That is why the government took this decision with much reluctance," he said.
The suppliers concerned have urged the government to increase the prices of not only fuel, also of many essential commodities, such as domestic gas etc. The ministerial subcommittee, appointed to prevent increased gas prices, took a number of alternative steps. Therefore, the gas suppliers had to accept our recommendations, the Minister added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
