President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said Sri Lanka is ready to enter into a free trade agreement ( FTA) with Singapore, President's Media Division (PMD) said.

The President has given this assurance during a meeting with the Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong in Tokyo today (27).

During the discussions, President Wickremesinghe informed the Singaporean Prime Minister that an international trade office was being established in the President's office.

He also explained that his priority was to bring into effect the Free Trade Agreement with Singapore.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong welcomed the news and stated that Singapore was looking forward to investing in Sri Lanka once again.

President Wickremesinghe invited the Singaporean Prime Minister to visit Sri Lanka next year when the country celebrates its 75th Independence Anniversary.

Singapore got independence after Ceylon built a prosperous and modern reasonably multi racial country. Malay is the National language, Tamil, English, Chinese official languages. We with our shinhala first, Buddhist foremost constitution have now proud 2500 year old civilisation beggars

It is the way to go, but it will take a long time to reap the benefits of FTA's. Anyway better late than never.

It may take ‘Yonks'? True! When you don’t start but delay and postpone it takes the time we were delaying PLUS 'Yonks' required to achieve fruition of the FTA benefits. That's what MaRa and SLPP did?? Wasting valuable time??!! Thackady Idiots, in deep slumber, most times??!!

Still, you don't undesrtand the effective political advise has its price. 1. R. Wickremesinghe has common problem in his office: he had not decided which are those SL citizens and foreign advisors which are able to lead the government departments. 2. IMHO, your newspaper has to do same: you need to demonstrate your SL's candidates along with the brief CV (level of education, political party, who is behind each candidate) for the exact (!) government vacancy, even the exact vacancy is filled by someone., to the SL public. IMHO, your prefence shall be given to SL lawyers, economists, engineers. As the SL commercial structures are formally shared by foreign countries which can be, as a case may be, excluded from the participation via the legal process. 3. The normal position of each president, he has to rely on his police forces and on the so called body guards for his protection during the office. Your candidates are abcent for SL law enforcement vacancies in HD and provinces ....

    4. The main political mistake. SL President has to decide on the structure of the SL government. President Ranil Wickremesinghe did not change the ineffective and illegal structure of SL governmnet after the victory in the Parliament where the majority expects the same uncontrolled level of their offices (it is money flow outside the SL budget). Your newspaper did not make any practical offers to the parliamnet in this regards. -- As a result, the so called inter goverment unpublished deal, signed between representatives of SL and Iran governmnets are laid down beyond the domestic SL law: SL governmnt has to control compliance of the commercail companies with law, but are not able to set up the commercial company for profits.

Yes we (SL) are ready to enter with any devil to sign any agreement or to sleep with any dog (with or without fleas) if we get few bucks. Our f*****g politicians, Rajapakses in particular, literally raped my and your beloved mother Lanka.

Singapore copied our economic strategies but SriLankans abused power, corruption reached every sectors of our economy, we became beggars, atleast the purported free trade agreement should revamp our economy, a good move indeed.

Finally for today: your 2 SEP article: President Wickremesinghe (is) correct about Sri Lankan Airlines’ soaring losses. -- It is related to my basic profession: the article represents private and profesional interest. SL ailines had won the world airlines competion (SKYTRAX) in many nominations in 2015, the managers left losses for citizens. The state of airline was mirror in impression for each government till mid 1990s due to ICAO (UN agency) activities. Each needs to focus its viwers on the particular economic subject and present articles in this regard. The article on the exposion or on terrorist act attracts more visitor than the financila statement, it s clear. But the jornalist's investigation on the flagman of SL can remind the SL government defined leaders about unfulfilled promises. SL law foresees, the case has to be decided in the particular time. If SL top official igonores law, he or she or his/her family has to pay the (financial) price for wrongdoing. Your turn now!

Ask SINGAPORE govt to provide a grant to fund free consultancy to design ànd draft the RFPs for a integrated trade facilitation hub single window transhipmet multi modal transport hub type operation. Thereafter float those RFPs buy from a suitable solution provider.

I forgot, to tell on merits of the article. 1. It is unclear what is the nature of agreement for the reader. 2. It looks, the agreemnt is an early move of SL government because of SL substantial debt existance in front of the nation (SL citizens). Consequently, if SL law enforcement will organize their units for the effective investigation in order to bring "black money" back to SL national bank, Singapore can be an attractive economical example. Otherwise, this and similar agreements, signed between SL with each foregn nation, will be left on paper, without the redinesss to invest in SL economy from Sinagpore financial institutions. SIN is a not a holly land in its financial deals, when I look at SL telecommnnication sector. over and out.

Ranil for all his shortcomings is at least, diplomatically inclined and has the gift of the gab....... such people can be counted on the fingers of one hand in Sri Lanka.... apparently!?

Extradite criminals Tuesday, 27 September 2022 04:41 PM

Great minds agree on positive actions for their nations. But I would like to make a teeny, weeny suggestion. "Don't accept any of our political, criminal fugitives who has done great damage to Sri Lanka. In case such a criminal is in Singapore, please kick him out or extradite him/her to Colombo, as you did during the recent past."
