President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had sought a report from Higher Education Minister Bandula Gunawardane regarding the present status of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) which is commonly called the Malabe Private Medical College.

Minister Gunawardane said he undertook a fact-finding mission to the SAITM premises. He said the Neville Fernando Hospital affiliated to the SAITM had been acquired by the government in the past.

Besides, he said the SAITM authorities were planning to sell off its assets to a leading retail chain to settle its loans.

“We will inform the President about it,” he said.

SAITM was mired in controversy after the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) protested with regard to private medical education. (Kelum Bandara)

We send many Sri Lankan students to Bangladesh private medical colleges and yet we close our medical colleges. What is wrong in the minds of our people ?

Yes doctor, we can think about the mindset of our people, what a narrow minded people are we.

It is really good to re open SAITM and start private medical college. Political leafers should take correct decission on publice related matters. If ther fear about their vote bank then we have to be like this another 100 years.

Our Doctors fo mot want more Doctors. That is the reason. They do not mind anyone going abroad to study medicine as long as no one does it within Sri Lanka. Our Doctors want to remain as 'frogs in the Well' and do not want to move further. They cannot see anything beyond government hospital job and private practice later in the evening to mint money from people.

I totally agree with Dr Sulaiman. Till the GMOA is there they will never allow private medical education as they want to be the Kings in SriLanka. Think of the money that goes out of the country. Please Mr President don't givein to these bastards.
