Political parties manoeuvered by the US, India: JVP

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said most of the political parties in the country were being operated by the American and Indian embassies, and that legislation detrimental to the people were passed in Parliament due to their influence.

He said this yesterday while participating in a protest march that commenced at Technical Junction and proceeded to Colombo Fort.

“Legal documents such as the Counter-Terrorism Bill are proposed not for the benefit of the people but to please India and the US. Political decisions in our country are taken by the US and India. When there is a conflict in the government, the Prime Minister doesn’t go to the people who elected him but rather goes to the US embassy for support. The Counter-Terrorism Bill that hinders people’s struggles and rights was not wanted by the public. The Inland Revenue Bill was recently passed in Parliament because the IMF demanded it. The government is entering into agreements detrimental to the country. It is trying to make Sri Lanka a military hub of global politics. The government is planning to ink a treaty with the US which will enable it to use Sri Lanka for its military exercises. These agreements will endanger our sovereignty. They are being signed without considering the threat to national security,” he said.

He said the government had proved it was no longer suitable to rule the country and protect its people.

“People should take to the street and oust the government. Our protest against the government is not a red carpet for Mahinda Rajapaksa to return to power. It is time for an alternative movement to stand for the rights of the people,” he said. (Ajith Siriwardana)

Compared to the political and strategic influence exerted by India on Sri Lanka the Chinese influence is next to zero. Recall who created the LTTE.
