The opposition today called for a debate on the eletricity tariff hike, claiming that people would be further burdened due to this decision.

Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella said the electricy tarrifs of most people had gone up by over 75 percent.

"The electricity tarrifs have gone up by 75 percent and over. How can people live with this ever increasing cost of living. It was earlier claimed that rulers were taken to the electric chair but now people are taken to electric chair with the tariff hike.We want the Minister to give an undertaking to reconsider the tariff increase after the debate," he said.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeygunawardane said the matter could be discussed at the party leaders meeting. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

  • We pay for govts negligence. Wednesday, 10 August 2022 03:13 PM

It's another blow for us with the already burning cost of living. Even candle light and kerosene lights are also very expensive and we are struggling without any alternatives. Politicians get every thing free and don't understand our plight. Govt must find ways to reduce the tariff to ease the burden of the people.

Mr. Kiriella please please stop this nonsense, you and the SJB, and work together and solve issues. Since you all are only finding fault and become worst than the JVP

Mr. Gomaella, the 225 is the lake resort is not fit to even clean toilets. I suggest you get on the streets with the Aragalaya and chase Ranil out. Sorry if you are planning to join him and start looting again. By the way it looks like no more lucrative highway projects. How’s you daughter doing. Signing off Aragalaya

Great news at least someone got substance hope he can put a stop to it.... The power

Grandstanding by the SJB. As if they don't know that services cannot continue to be provided for extended periods below cost! Mr Kiriella should state in his debate who is going to pay for the pricing recovery shortfall. It is partly this type of political opportunism that has brought the country to where it is now, and the SJB seeks to continue with such irresponsible positions.

Even if it's going to be a burden on the people, there is nothing one can do other than to increase the price due to the world market price of raw materials and to prevent further losses to the CEB. It seems Kirella, Dr. Harasha, and the rest of SJB don't seem to understand the fundamentals. What a bunch of idiots. I presume the only place for them is the Parliament, so they can continue to rob steel and use the privileges at the cost of the general public. Dolly

Deaf and blind govt Wednesday, 10 August 2022 07:25 PM

What is the use of having a debate there are enough Rajapakshas donkeys on the govt side to pay any bills in the parliament. Its time for the opposition party members to refrain form attending parliament sacrifice your perks and call for an election.

Yes absolutely. People are already struggling with fuel price hikes, gas price increases, medical price increases, exorbitant cost of food items, taxes and more. There is not one area where the people haven't taken a beating financially and does this Govt think that money grows on trees. People don't get monthly wage increases to sustain the every increasing cost of living. Even those with some money are finding it hard, so one can only image the hardship of the poor. Daily wage earners are the worst hit. Obviously with an increase in electricity - everything goes up in price and at the end of the day - the public have to shoulder ALL the burden. Use the salaries of the 225 incompetent lot in parliament than burdening the people. NOT only do we suffer with a high cost of living, our money goes to keeping these jokers to warm the seats in parliament

New electicity cheaper Wednesday, 10 August 2022 07:58 PM

President at last open the door to really independent big power plant with Nuclear. In Western country too many times, no wind, and then over cast causes electricity problem. India and China embrace nuclear power for electricity. It provides for longer term sustainability instead hope for the wind and sun, which aren't always all the time reliable. Just like rain not reliable for hydro.

What debate? Power tariff has been same for several years. Which country on earth does that? Just like our fuel bills- cost up or down selling prices remain rock bottom. How can we progress as a nation? Take tourism - we are cheaper than the most cheapest locations (except for places where they kill each other for food on the streets)

Adam Speak Wednesday, 10 August 2022 11:28 PM

For sure this is not the time to increases the Electricity Charges. No matter, whether subsidized or no. As people are already suffering with high cost of living. Let common sense prevail with the government and the loss making CEB. Just privatize and bring in more companies for competitions such as Telecommunication for an example. Some of the vital state institutions are making great losses due to inefficiency and corruption.

    Sambo Thursday, 11 August 2022 08:33 AM

The opposition only calls for debates and that's it but nothing happens.

    E.P. Edmund Weerasinghe [Attorney-at-Law] Thursday, 11 August 2022 08:38 AM

Yes its a must.... not only debating the increased electricity tarrif hike should be reduced to a nominal amount.

    Consumer Thursday, 11 August 2022 12:11 PM

PUCSL should make a study in curtailing expenditure of the CEB e.g. Excess Staff, Excess Overtime Meaningless Bonus Payments when institution is running at a loss etc ? Merely burdening the Consumers with higher Tariffs is not the answer.

Baby Driver Sunday, 14 August 2022 08:10 AM

You can huff and puff but you will never get the PUCSL 'bus to reverse- no driver!!!!!!!
