Claiming that the power supply could be continued without interruptions until next Tuesday (18), Power Minister Gamini Lokuge said today a decision would have to be taken on power cuts if the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) did not provide required fuel stocks to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) until January 22.

He told the media that there would be no power cuts until Tuesday (18) as the CPC had provided 3000 MT of fuel to the CEB.

“We will have a discussion with the CPC tomorrow (17) to obtain required fuel stocks until January 22. If they refuse to do so, we will have to take a decision on power cuts,” he said.

The Minister said engineers had assured that the 3rd unit of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant, which was out of order due to a breakdown, would be restored by January 22, adding 300 MW to the national grid.

He also said there was an issue of hydropower generation due to the prevailing drought and added that Irrigation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa had assured last week to provide continuous water supply to the hydro-power stations until the prevailing crisis was resolved.

“Water in the reservoirs has to be released for drinking purposes and irrigation purposes as well. We had a discussion with Irrigation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa last week and he assured continuous water supply to hydro-power stations until the present crisis is over,” he said.(Ajith Siriwardana)

These people make it look like everything is our fault, and they are doing us a favor by giving us food, water and electricity.

We never had such a crisis over the years. Even during the LTTE conflict we had uninterrupted power supply. There were floods, overspilling of reservoirs, opening of sluice gates were reported in recent times. Was it bad planning, sabotage or mismanagement? Everything is happening like the TongaTsunami and volcano. Pearl of Indian Ocean transformed into tears of Indian ocean.

No dollar and no oil and the result is power cut . How long and how far you can hide your mistakes from public ? Please makes some quick and sensible decion about people and the country . If you can do any longer give the leadership to some one who could do it . It is not shame to do this . We all are Human beings and we make mistakes but wise one is who take timely decision before bring utter destruction upon him self .

By the way you and your cabinet member are handling this crisis, can you give the public a timetable as to when there will be no power cuts. This is make life easy for people like me who do not have a standby engine generator or batteries.

CPC will provide fuel if you pay for it. Consumers pay electricity bills, except for some concessions due to covid.

High time you went home. You are not fit to be a parliamentarian any more. You say one thing and CEB says something exactly the opposite.
