Denouncing the moves by the Government to import 227 Prado SUVs amounting to US$ 18 million at this critical juncture, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today said there was a massive fraud behind this vehicle import.
JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake making a special statement revealed that the Letter of Credits (LCs) had been opened to import the vehicle fleet on April 22, 2021 whereas the Cabinet approval was sought on May 18, 2021.
He said the LCs were opened even without Cabinet approval and said that the whole process behind this move was a deal with the MPs who voted for the Port City Bill.
“The LCs were opened on April 22, 2021. Cabinet approval was sought on May 18. However, this Cabinet Paper was rejected at the next Cabinet meeting on May 24. These LCs have been opened without a Cabinet approval. It is a deal with the MPs. They opened LCs and later realised that they wanted to get the approval. That was why the cabinet paper was presented a month later with a covering approval for measures taken thus far regarding the vehicle import. The whole process is corrupt and malicious,” he charged.
He urged the Government to reveal whether due tender procedure has been followed and competitive biddings have been called for before opening LCs.
The JVP Parliamentarian said the government should in the first place stop this move or at least sell the fleet of vehicles in public auction and raise funds to be used for some other useful purpose.(Ajith Siriwardana)

It is no secret our entire country is functioning on fraud to benefit the politicians and their appointees regardless which party governs.

Why should the people be the ones who pay for the government's blunders

Extremely unfair. People are paying tax for their luxury. In some areas people survive on boiled papaya as main meal.

The Opposition political parties can shout as much as they want, nothing will stop the government from continuing their corrupt activities. Post facto cabinet approvals, not following procurement procedures and not even buying from the manufactures. A third party based in Singapore I believe is handling the deal. Corruption with impunity.

Can not agree more than what he says. We buy vehicles for Gvt institutes every five year and what happens to them ? are we in a position to have luxury life with buying Prado's every 5 year .? are we selling the country to buy Prado's ? and for how long??

While begging all over the world for life saving vaccines, from where the hell this government got funds to import luxury vehicles? Who is going to reap the benefit from this import?

All Politicians work for their own benefit and nobody Else's. Also they are superb at taking credit even if they are not due to them

THOSE OPPOSING PARLIMENTARIANS ARE REQUESTED TO REFUSE ACCEPTANCE OF THE VEHICLE ALLOTTED TO HIM/HER. THEN WE COULD JUDGE WHO ARE GENUINE IN THEIR ACTIONS

This country is regressing day by day since the British handed it over.

If you can't stop the import, do not give it to any politicians . Dumping them in the sea is better than allowing rouges to keep them.
Horunge horu Friday, 11 June 2021 08:32 PM
What can we do to stop this fraud from us
roni Friday, 11 June 2021 08:46 PM
If this is correct the president must call for the resignation of the PM and CBSL bank supervision should hold BOC Chairman for responsible for its action

The jvp must not oppose blindly. There is nothing wrong with importing vehicles for government use. The government is facing a pandemic and many of them are working hard to bring success to the country. Therefore travel is very important and safety is also important. The people opposing are traitors to the country.

It is not wrong if they were rewarded with SUVs when the MPs voted to develop the country, in a landmark project i.e."The Port City" to be conducted without any hindrance.

69% ignorant Sinhalese voted for this, so why complain?
