The price of a kilogramme of wheat flour would be increased by Rs.8 with effect from midnight today, the Serendib Flour Mills (SFML) (Pvt.) Ltd said.

The company has already informed this regard to its agents.

The company said the decision was taken due to uncontrollable external factors caused to the flour industry for a long time.

It said the rapid depreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR) against the US Dollar (USD) caused the first reason to increase the flour price. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

The fault is ours. We are too much dependant of wheat based food. The Government should encourage rice based food industries employing women and direct the male workforce towards better productive professions. Too much of our male work force tied in such avenues is a reason for our poor economic growth

Food substitution is not the answer. There's no lack of wheat in the world to justify substitution. The problem here is taxation and depreciation of currency. Not every food can be substituted with rice. It just won't taste the same. Besides, even with taxation, rice is expensive as it is and keeps getting pricier.
