The Education Minister advised the National Institute of Education (NIE) officials to commence their education activities by January 15,
The decision was announced following a meeting held at the ministry yesterday.
Accordingly, the activities of the NIE will commence on January 15 and the academic activities will commence on January 18.
The Minister also instructed the officials to expedite the establishment of new faculties for the students who are currently studying technology in the Advanced Level (A/L) stream in their schools to be admitted to pursue teacher training in that subject.
There are 19 faculties available around the country. After commencing the teaching activities, the number of faculties will be increased to 20. The NIEs were closed due to the pandemic situation and used as COVID-19 treatment centres.
There are 7,784 students currently engaged in teacher training, and about 4,547 of them have been found eligible for immediate recruitment as teachers. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
