Discussions are in progress to provide concession on electricity bills to low income groups in the revised budget, to be presented at the end of this month, Leader of the House Susil Premajayantha said today.
He told Parliament that the revised budget was planning to be included in the order paper for August 30, 31 and September 1 and 2.
Responding to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, he said one-day debate was scheduled for August 29 on electricity tariff hike.
The Opposition Leader said people are finding it hard to bear the electricity tariff hike and added that low income families, industrialists and tourism sector were badly affected by the tariff hike.
He requested the government to reconsider the tariff hike and provide concessions to the people in distress.
Minister Premajayantha said discussions are held to provide concessions to groups which require such concessions. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Industrials and Tourism Sector will anyhow cover the cost, since they will increase their prices. Its the low income families. Plan an income structure and icrease accordingly. For Example Earning a below 50,000 No Increase. 50, 000 to 100,000 25% 100,000 to 200,000 50% 200,000 and above 75% Same way categories the small Industrials, Tourism Sector, and eating place etc. Since everyone should understand and know that an increase is a must if the country has to exisit, oppositions parties who are talking and wanting to have debates. its only for their furture benifit and when they come into power they too will do the same thing. Country is in this situatuion because of Political Parties where the country has been robbed and no genuine management.

Hay Minister, not only the low income people, 75% increase on Electricity charges are too much. Before people get in to the streets, reduce the charges overhaul.

I know a family, officially income level below 50k and received COVID-19 allowance and the parents are samurdhi beneficiary. But the guy earns well over 1 mil a week. (Tution classes in multiple locations) rides in a V8. Agree with Hon. Oops. Leader. We need to give them more and more benefits cause they officially fall under low income group!
