While urging the government to reveal the number of containers of garbage imported to Sri Lanka, JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake also urged the government to cancel the gazette notice issued in 2013 which had permitted such imports.
He told parliament that the Customs Department had revealed that the gazette notice 1818/30 dated July 11, 2013, had provided the legal basis to import garbage.
The MP said the government should reveal the number of containers of garbage imported, by whom and during which period and pointed out that the people should know how many containers of garbage had been re-exported and how many of them were still in the country.
He asked if the government was going to take legal action against those involved in the scam and whether it would take steps to ensure that these controversial containers were re-exported under supervision. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
