Highways Minister Johnston Fernando advised constructing an alternative road from Warakapola town, parallel to the Colombo - Kandy road on view to reduce traffic congestion in the Warakapola town and Ambepussa.
Therefore, the minister advised the ministry secretary to accelerate the project work. The alternative road will be constructed south of the Colombo - Kandy road from the Warakapola town, the minister said.
"The government has completed the process of acquiring lands for the project and 98% of compensation had already been paid," he said.
"The construction aimed at reducing congestion in the Warakapola town and Ambepussa area along the Colombo- Kandy main road due to the absence of an alternative road," he said.
Minister Fernando pointed out that it takes an hour to travel from Colombo to Warakapola, but another hour just to travel the 2 km between the Warakapola town and Ambepussa, which he has personally experienced.
As per the construction plan, the alternative road from Warakapola Town will be 2,350 meters in length and 22.80 meters width. The special feature of the plan is the construction of a flyover spanning 550 meters in length, he said.
The construction of the alternative road from the Warakapola town is estimated to cost Rs. 4,111.16 million.
The Minister added that this project would not only solve the heavy traffic congestion in and around Warakapola town in the Colombo-Kandy road but also would help the development of Warakapola town. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Good move please keep provisions for future expansions and parking .If not everyone will park the car on the road and nullify the purpose of road. It take 4hrs to travel 120km and it’s a waste of time and double the fuel waste

Instead of new road , why not widen the existing road by adding some extra lanes. More roads mean, less land for cultivation. More pollution.

So only when you go through a hardship personally that you want to correct. Was this why you wanted Duty Free Vehicles for MP's while the country is at its worst financial crisis, because it is not you who is losing but the people.

Good move. But it is ideal if govt can expand 4 lanes Colombo-Kandy road up to Ambepussa from Nittabuwa. It is another 20 Kms and land acquisition is not difficult compared to the first stage as most of the lands are paddy fields.

Poor JF. Wonder if he can carry this enormous load? I mean the weight of all the commissions he must be pocketing!
