Kandy SC scrum-half Srinath Sooriyabandara has been named as captain of Sri Lanka 7’s rugby team ahead of the Commonwealth Games and Asia Games later this year.

The former Isipathana College speedster is one of the most outstanding 7s players in the Asian circuit and he has been tremendous for league leaders Kandy Sports Club all season along.

Unsurprisingly, Kandy players dominate the squad having missed the Seven Series a few months ago courtesy of idiotic administration by the Ministry of Sports which blocked all the Kandy players from taking part in the tournament and as a result of that the inexperienced Sri Lanka team was humiliated in Dubai.

Soori is joined by Tarinda Ratwatte, Nigel Ratwatte, Danush Dayan, Kavindu Perera and Buddhima Piyaratne to make it six Kandy stars in the national squad.

Adeesha Weeratunga of Navy who captained Sri Lanka in their last assignment has found himself a place in the finalized squad alongside Chathura Senevirathne.

Army winger Sudaraka Dikkumbura has also kept him place in the squad although he has not had a great league tournament.

SL Squad: Srinath Sooriyabandara (captain), Tarinda Ratwatte, Nigel Ratwatte, Adeesha Weeratunga, Danush Dayan, Anjula Hettiarachchi, Mithun Hapugoda, Kavindu Perera, Buddhima Piyaratne, Sudaraka Dikkumbura, Reeza Raffaideen, Chathura Senevirathne
