Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene yesterday said he will give a ruling within three weeks on the Parliamentary seat of MP- Ranjan Ramanayake who has been convicted of contempt of court by the Supreme Court.
The Speaker said this in response to lengthy arguments between the members of both the Opposition and the Government MPs.
“I gave my ruling on MP- Premalal Jayasekera after a careful consideration of relevant laws and proceedings. One can recall that Mr. Jayasekera was not allowed to attend Parliament sessions initially. In the case of Mr. Ramanayake, I will have to consult legal experts. The prevailing COVID- 19 pandemic situation does not allow me to meet legal experts in a hurry. Therefore I need some time to carry out a study before giving a ruling on Mr. Ramanayake’s seat,” the Speaker said.
Earlier Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa questioned as to why Mr. Ramanayake cannot attend the sessions. Mr. Premadasa argued that Mr. Ramanayake will only lose his parliamentary seat only after he serves six months of his four- yea-r prison sentence. “Chairman of Election Commission has confirmed that Mr. Ramanayake will only lose his seat as and when he completes six months of his prison sentence. Therefore we don’t see why he cannot be allowed to attend sessions,” Mr. Premadasa said.
Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage who responded to the Opposition Leader said the Attorney General had clearly stated that Mr. Ramanayake would lose his seat as soon as the Supreme Court verdict was given. “ Mr. Ramanayake was convicted because he went about accusing the Judges. He even said judicial officers are rogues when he was being taken away after the verdict,” he said.
MP- Premalal Jayasekera said he had given notice on the appeal after the case was filed against him.
Minister of Justice Ali Sabry said the sentence imposed on MP Premalal Jayasskera would get suspended at the time he gave the notice of the appeal.
