National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection (NMCRP) yesterday said police should arrest MPs who own illegal betting centres rather than making arrests which are really political victimization.
The NMCRP convener Ranjith Vithanage said his organisation is opposed to political victimization while those politicians who engage in grave crimes are allowed to carry out their activities freely.
“We criticize MP Ranjan Ramanayake for many of his deeds but he is a person who spoke fearlessly on behalf of the people in several instances.
However, if the government continues to arrest people friendly politicians it will die a natural death,” Mr Vithanage said.
“Police will prove that it is acting independently if they arrest an MP who carry out betting centres in Colombo,” he added.
