The CID has launched an investigation into two coordinating secretaries of two cabinet ministers, who had allegedly being trying to recover a stock of gold allegedly buried in the Puthukkudiyiruppu area in Mullaitivu during the war.

It was reported they were secretaries to the Minister of Public Security and the Minister of Fisheries.

A stock of stolen gold which had been allegedly buried in the Puthukkudiyiruppu area by the LTTE was to be recovered on November 25 as per a  court order.
However, the excavations had been postponed until today (02).

The illegal attempts of the two secretaries were revealed following information received by the SSP in charge of the Mullaitivu Division.

Accordingly, a complaint had been lodged with the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security.   Meanwhile, Minister Sarath Weerasekara said that the official from his Ministry, who is allegedly involved in the incident, had been suspended with immediate effect.

He said law enforcement has been instructed to conduct a thorough, and impartial inquiry on a priority basis.

Minister Douglas Devananda told Daily Mirror he was not aware of any such incident but if any of his Ministry members were involved in such an act then action would be taken and the official would be suspended.

He said he had instructed his Ministry to initiate an immediate probe.
