Norochcholai Coal Power plant which was repaired within a period of three months, spending a sum of Rs.690 million, has again been broken down just ten days after resuming work, Ceylon Electricity Board sources said.
The functioning of 300 megawatt electricity generator of the first stage of the Lakvijaya Coal Power Station in Norochcholai was stopped for repairs from November last year. But, it began to function again from last February 4. However, it has gone out of order on February 14 again.
According to sources, CEB has paid US $3.8 million to a Chinese firm for its repairs. As a result of non-functioning of the 300 megawatt generator of this plant, six additional gigawatt hours are generated from the hydro-power stations according to CEB sources. The sources said that the water level of the main reservoirs is declining due to acute dry weather conditions.
