The present government has failed to suspend the transaction and start up an investigation, which had led to the Rs.10 billion sugar importation scam to date, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said yesterday.
Mr. Wijewardene who was speaking to UNP activists in Dambulla over the weekend said no investigation has begun on the Sugar importation scam where a businessman who is a key government associate had earned Rs.10 billion from the sudden reduction of Rs.50 import duty imposed on sugar.
“Our government was blamed for the bond scam but the former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe suspended the transaction. All funds involved in the sale of bonds are with the Central Bank to date. However, this government had failed to take similar action with regard to sugar importation scam,” Mr. Wijewardene said.
