New laws pertaining to the prevention of COVID-19 will be published in a gazette notification by this week, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
He said the gazette paper with COVID-19 prevention laws and regulations recommended by the World Health Organisation will be issued by the Health Minister.
The DIG said legal action will be taken against those who do not comply with the health regulations.
DIG Rohana said that a fine of Rs.10,000 and imprisonment could be imposed by courts on those who violate the quarantine laws.
Those who do not wear masks, failing to maintain social distance at public places and those who violate quarantine procedures can be punished legally, he said.
He said the public should strictly adhere to health guidelines following the detection of the Brandix cluster.
