Colombo’s three main prisons -- the Remand Magazine and Welikada -- will be soon monitored by CCTV cameras, Prisons Commissioner and Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said.
He said this would ensure the safety of the three prisons and also help thwart any violence and criminal activities from taking place inside prisons.
The CCTV cameras have already been fixed in the Angunakolapelessa and Boossa prisons while STF personnel have already been deployed at the prison gates. “This will strengthen the external security at prisons and also to obtain their assistance when search operations are carried out inside prisons,” Mr. Ekanayake said.
He said there had been several cases of banned items such as cell-phones being thrown over the outer walls into the prisons.
“However, we have been able to minimise illegal substances being smuggled into prisons,” Mr. Ekanayake said.
