The carcasses of four wild elephants had been discovered yesterday lying on the banks of a tank in Hiriwadunna area at Habarana.
Wildlife officers revealed that three of the cow elephants were pregnant. They suspect that the pachyderms had been poisoned to death. An investigation is underway by the Wild Life Officers.
In this forest area, people are used to clearing the wooded lands for cultivation.
Wildlife officers believe these elephants have been killed as a result of human-elephant conflict.
