The Intelligence Unit of the Angunukolapelessa prison detected a mobile phone suspected to have been brought to be given to imprisoned MP Ranjan Ramanayake, Prison spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said.
He said according to the intelligence alert received by the prison intelligence unit, the officers searched the special ‘Y’ section and the surrounding area yesterday morning.
The spokesman said Ranjan and several inmates are being held in the ‘Y’ section.
During the search, the officers recovered a mobile phone buried in the ground between the ‘Y’ section and the wall.
Mr. Ekanayake said investigations have been launched to determine whether the phone was brought to be given to Ramanayake.
He said the mobile phone was handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department.
Earlier, the Prison Department said that Ranjan Ramanayake will not be allowed visitors or to use a telephone facility for two weeks for taking a selfie with MP Harshana Rajakaruna who had paid a visit to the Angunakolapelessa Prison.
