There is no one living In Sri Lanka born before 1890

This is good but how can we get it ..It is done across all counties during the colonial time .. Dutch ; Portuguese and English all did it..we should ask them as well

Britain treated the up country Indian Tamils as subhumans, treated the Sinhalese as third class natives, and treated the Jaffna Tamils as second class natives.

You were keeping quiet for all these years , so why now ?

British government may agree, with a CAVEAT that all earnings from Tea, Rubber and Coconut exports from Sri Lanka PLUS Cost of ‘Food Imports to feed all Sri Lankans’ be credited to Britain from 1823 to Date!?? Question is, why were the Indentured Labour (IL)" brought in to SL??? IL had no work, to support themselves in India, and they were brought to SL and employed Paid ‘housed’ and ‘Fed’ – a major difference then as in India, virtually starving!!! The main reason for the IL to be brought in was because LOCALS were far too lazy (2600 - sorry then 2300 years civilisation) to get up and attend 'MUSTER' at 7.00 AM to start work in Tea Plantations in the cool, Upcountry Climes in the hills!! Interesting, if ever there was ‘care’ to be ONE!!!??

They also wiped out male youths in most parts of upcountry in 1810! It is recorded history. They tossed small children up and shot them dead as target practice.

Not only British the Dutch before that and Portuguese before that combined ruled Sri Lanka for 450 years making us to be obedient to their command and raped our country of our riches like Tea,Rubber,Cocunut,Gold,Precious Gems,Grafite,Minerals ect and of cause the countless number of citizens disappeared. It’s time to repay Dear King Charles the 111. Only you could do it for your Grand,Great Grand and Great Great Grandparents greed.

What about justice and compensation for the Kandyan Sinhala peasants whose lands were forcibly taken over by the British ; the damage to the environment too is incalculable. The Kandyan Sinhala people were the traditional owners of these lands. They were primary victims of genocide

In Malaysia the decent Malays empowered the Tamils that the British bought to work in rubber plantations and they are now participating in every sector of society and employing Sri Lankan maids from mighty powerful rich Sri Lanka. We fearful of empowering our estate sector subjugated them for a supine work force in our tea estates and now telling them that their disadvantaged status is the fault of the British

I don't think the UK govt has the money or the time. What is Ranil's solution? That's our water source the hill country.Sad very sad, failure of successive govts to create a national spirit, a united Sri Lanka. We have every type of conflict in SL, religious, racial, privileged vs other

Nestley Meerwald Wednesday, 31 May 2023 07:02 AM

This is ridiculous. It was the Brits who brought the Rail and Tea Plantations to Ceylon.

    Sokrates Wednesday, 31 May 2023 08:14 AM

What do you want compensation for? For the fact that the British brought your ancestors out of abject poverty from India to Sri Lanka and gave them work? For the fact that you got houses that were reasonable for the time? For building infirmaries and schools in the estates. For allowing you to practice your religion undisturbed. You should demonstrate against the Sri Lankan government and demand compensation for the fact that you have been denied SL citizenship for decades, that you have been oppressed and treated like second-class citizens, that some of you still have to live in 200-year-old houses, that the state and his Sinhalese estate managers have exploited you and are still paying estate workers too low wages.

Catholics protesting doing better than Cardinal Colombo cohorts Wednesday, 31 May 2023 08:21 AM

After seeing the Cardinal's Colombo man make up needless complaints about Pastor Jerome, I have lost faith with most of the Catholic leadership. They are too much into politics, and seeking government concessions like electricity below cost rates than helping society. These catholic priests who protest are doing better than the V8 driven Cardinal and assistants, as these people stand on foot and complain, and not to microphones.

Earlier I have read comments from some one that Britain did great things to Sri Lanka such as building railways and roads. Railways and roads were built to transport British troops ( officers all white British, soldiers mostly Indian killers ) quickly to put down any rebellion against the occupation and to transport goods to ports to be taken back to Britain. Britain wanted to stay as Masters permanently in Sri Lanka and all other colonies, so all structures were built for British interest and not for Sri Lankans. If Second World War hadn’t happened we would still be under British, living as second class citizens in our own country. Now they have gone and we have taken charge of the railways and the roads that some idiots in Sri Lanka thinking that these railways and roads were originally built for us.

Thomas Dharmachandra Wednesday, 31 May 2023 09:21 AM

For that matter of Compensation from Great Britain , all people in Ceylon , India and whole commonwealth nations Entitled to compensation. DON'T TRY TO TALK ABOUT THE PAST If that's the case Tamils of Sri Lanka should demand for compensation from the Sri Lanka Govt for 1958, 1983 Riots, which killed thousands

    Gamini Wednesday, 31 May 2023 10:23 AM

So blatantly organized protest. Why only the Catholic clergy is protesting after 75 years. Why the affected tea estate workers are not protesting

    Umm Wednesday, 31 May 2023 10:38 AM

When the UK receives compensation from the Romans/Angles/Saxons/Normans/Vikings for there respective genocides and slavery raids on their Island i'm sure they pass some of the proceeds onward. How far back in history do you want to go! The fact of the matter is the world was a very different place in the past. If the situation of the two countries was reversed exactly the same would have happened. You can only influence the future. Move on, grow and proper.
