Former MP, Ajith Nivard Cabraal who assumed duties as the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) today said that the first priority of the monetary watchdog under his leadership will be to shed light on the macroeconomic stance of the economy.
“The Central Bank's first and urgent priority under my watch will be to provide clarity with regard to the movement of Sri Lanka's macro-economic fundamentals in the desired path and thereby ensure stability in the financial sector,” said Cabraal in his initial statement to the media as CBSL governor.
He pointed out that for the people of the county to experience economic stability, “undue fears” must be dispelled, and “damaging expectations” must not be escalated. And for this, the CBSL will need to provide clear and firm guidance to all economic stakeholders particularly at turbulent times, such as the current times, said Cabraal.
Meanwhile, alongside thanking President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, and Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa for the confidence and trust placed in him, Cabraal said: “I will assure all of them that they will not be let down, and the economy will be steered towards continued stability.”
