The government is planning to hand over the lands belonging to loss-making plantation companies to tea smallholders as a pilot project, a statement by the President’s Media Division said.

According to PMD, 10 out of the 20 major plantation companies are currently inoperative. It has also been pointed out that the production capacity of plantation companies has been on the decline in an environment where small tea estates achieve higher productivity.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today instructed officials to identify causes for losses and inactivity of these companies within a short period of time and provide permanent solutions to their issues.

President Rajapaksa yesterday announced plans to acquire lands with gem deposits belonging to plantation companies for the benefit of the mining industry.

First investigate if these plantation companies are routing some of the crop through dishonest smallholders or fictitious names to go trough as bought leaf or to other private factories at a discount for kickbacks. Never have seen such dishonesty in such huge proportions as has taken place in the past decade. Same with rubber, where some of the private factories/names have seen a surprising improvement in manufacture of estate quality latex crepe superior quality.

Plantations industry is an asset to the country and every effort should be made to uplift them in productive discussions with those companies concerned. Handing over to small holders are not viable as done in the past. Can LRC give us the present extent-hectares available and the extent took over In 1972 and 1975 with a reconciliation statement?
