Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera, one of the key activists in President Maithripala Sirisena’s election campaign, today said that they didn’t ask for the 100-day programme.

“We in fact suggested six months to deliver promises given to the people,” he said.

Holding a news conference at Naga Viharaya in Kotte, the Head of the National Movement for Social Justice, Ven. Sobitha Thera said their movement's opinion was to make the reforms within six months of time but the political parties including the UNP opted for the 100-day programme.

"We didn’t ask for 100 days. The government could take until next April to deliver its promises as it seems it is running out of time. An election is not the priority at this time. People voted for reforms, which the government should deliver at any cost," he said.

The Thera said the government should do away with the Preferential Vote System and bring in a new electoral system before a general election.  “This is a must,” he said. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

How short sighted people are. The Rajapakse regime ruled for 8 years out of which we got peanuts. New roads did not increase our income the cost of living soared. At least with the new regime we got decent reductions. We need to also take note that you cannot just charge a man and send him to prison like the Rajapakse regime did to General SF. You need to find good solid rock hard proof do you think such proof can be found easily. Statements of persons alone is not good enough. MY3 Take all the time you need if your plans for this country and its people are noble. via DM Android App

    asoka Thursday, 19 February 2015 11:42 AM

Why do you keep your mouth silence regarding the replacement of THISARA SAMARASINGHE

    Rish Thursday, 19 February 2015 12:50 PM

How can the goal post move if the thero did not define one in the first place. If at all its MY3 and Ranil who should be moving posts.

    jayantha Thursday, 19 February 2015 01:02 PM

The common man does not want general elections right now. But we expect political reforms and action against corruption in due course. The political culture is changing in Sri Lanka and people are demanding wise political decisions from their leaders.

    Sujith Thursday, 19 February 2015 08:59 AM

Hon Thero just speaks what Indians want us to do. Seems like an Indian RAW Agent

This time we the people should not allow the politicians to go back on their word. We must have a viable alternative and the ven. Monk should take the lead.

Ukkun Putha Thursday, 19 February 2015 02:51 PM

Sir, who is short sighted? your decent reductions are coming at an expenses to the government which has to come from tax from somewhere else as the politicians are not going to pump this money from their pockets Only way out is to work hard to develop this country which no one else did for the last 60 years except MR.

Haamuduruwane, in the construction sector itself lost over 50,000 jobs at present. With their dependents over 150,000 have lost revenue. Mahinda Matthaya lost the election marginally. Under the circumstance I think he will be the next Executive PM, as people (voters) would have different priority than Yaha Paalanaya. Ranil Mahattaya always like to be happy to the position of " Vipaska Naayaka Kama" . Therefore take enough time to deliver the promises.

The Five Precepts are the basis of Buddhist morality. The first precept is to avoid killing or harming living beings. The second is to avoid stealing, the third is to avoid sexual misconduct, the fourth is to avoid lying and the fifth is to avoid alcohol and other intoxicating drugs. Are you Pretending to be a buddhist priest?

    Bala Wednesday, 18 February 2015 03:04 PM

Fully agreewith you Revd Thero. What we want is the final good result. Even Engineers and builders give approx time but reasonable extension allowed. So if you can do it in 150 days very fine - just do it.

    kamal Wednesday, 18 February 2015 03:53 PM

Agree with Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera explanation. We need to correct what ever went wrong during the previous Government. Do not come to an election without keeping the promises to the general public. It is a kind of suicide, UNP guys know how to suicide very well.

    Dayawathie Wednesday, 18 February 2015 03:59 PM

When did we deliver anything on time in Sri Lanka ?. With all due respect to you Revd.Thero , are you moving the goal posts now ?.

    Labby Wednesday, 18 February 2015 04:08 PM

Is this the reason why the government is backtracking on its promise to bring all wrongdoers to book?

    Dr M.L.Najimudeen Wednesday, 18 February 2015 04:12 PM

I fully agree with Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera. Sudden hurried activities and not good. The government need one year to do the necessary changes gradually. There is no need for an election at present

    A. Silva Thursday, 19 February 2015 08:45 AM

Ven Sobitha Sadu,Why do not you ask President Sirisena to abolish the present constitution completely and to re-introduce the Solbury constitution with lower house and upper house in the Parliament and the same voting system that we had under that constitution. That is what we had before 1972 and we all lived very peacefully under more democratic rule during that period. By amending present constitution is a waste of time and waste of money only
