A A A

President Mahinda Rajapaksa led UPFA secured an overwhelming mandate at yesterday’s Local Government Election-2011, obtaining power of 205 local bodies from 234 in which elections were held.

Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) has won twelve Councils, including Mannar Urban Council, Pradeshiya Sabha, Vavauniya PS, Manathai East PS, Trincomalee UC and Naveenthanveli PS.

The UNP has obtained the power of only nine councils, including Kuliyapitiya UC, Gampola UC, Bandarawela MC, Kadugannawa UC and Kalutara UC. Several Local Authorities in the Gampaha district, including Wattala Mabola UC, Wattala PS and Peliyagoda UC which were previously ruled by the UNP have been won by the ruling UPFA.

The SLMC has taken the power of four bodies, while two councils have been obtained by  the National Congress. (Daily Mirror online)

Hi Ranil, Please learn that SrLankans love their country. They do not like people who betray their country in the international community. I think some one should send you on a scholarship for about 20 years to study political science. .

Senior CitizenSenior Friday, 18 March 2011 02:53 AM

Obvious with EC IGP State Media on one side. Like a cricket match with home umpires, home crowd and frightened opponents with no hope of justice and fairplay.

Excellent knock for the big headed, atitude prone, ego mongral JVPs. Thats the best outcome. They must know that JVP is not the alternative nay more, and nobody beleives what they say.

    Imtias Friday, 18 March 2011 05:00 AM

Mr Prime Minister, you lied in the parliment and your voters in Gampola turned their back to you. How long you should stay in the seat of PM ??

    Ekanayake Friday, 18 March 2011 05:00 AM

All political parties should realize that the days of hoodwinking the masses are gone and all concerned should analyze the voter turn over.

General Public is sick of elections and its a waste of public funds. All those who contest for elections have their own agenda and not the serving of people and the country.

What we need at this juncture is a disciplined ruler who put country first and nothing else.

    Ariya

    Ari Friday, 18 March 2011 05:10 AM

The UNP and JVP bigwigs have undoubtedly been thrown into a state of utter confusion by this voters' verdict. When they recover from the condition and become sober, hope it will dawn on them that the period when the ordinary voter in Sri Lanka can be taken for a ride by sensational slogans and rhetoric is long past.

Rata Wesiya Friday, 18 March 2011 05:52 AM

Overall performance of the UNP is good. They have improved from the last election. Genarally the results have an impact towards the ruling party specially in a local govt election. Even after lot of people who deserted the party for money and perks. Well done UNP can go forward with Sajith's leadership and send this corrupt govt home.

    DHA Friday, 18 March 2011 06:07 AM

As long as Ranil remain this will be the result in any election.....

    nafa Friday, 18 March 2011 06:10 AM

    NW Friday, 18 March 2011 06:40 AM

reasons for the election defeat ( from an UNP's view point)

    1. Earthquake in japan
    2. Cricket world cup
    3. Lybia crisis
    4. Attack on Paba
    5. floods in north & east
    6. Rajapaksa brothers
    7. radiation leak in japan
    8. Wickileaks

    Gotukola Friday, 18 March 2011 06:40 AM

Missed on the favorite reason, people do not want to vote.

    rodney Friday, 18 March 2011 07:02 AM

    Dear Mr. Ranil,

Please learn how to win people's heart.

we all know that UPFA not 100% accurate. but our main objective is to see Sri Lanka become a great prosperous country. Sri Lanka should be ruled in Sri Lankan way. NOT for the way suggested by Robert Blake. if you want to became a future leader in Sri Lanka you should understand that.

WE SHOULD TAKE SRI LANKA TO PROSPERITY. BUT SAME TIME "UDFA" SHOULD RECTIFY THEIR WEAKNESSES AND ERRORS BY THEMSELF.

    khan Friday, 18 March 2011 07:02 AM

WELL DONE NW.I AM SURE RANIL HAVE A THIS KIND REASON FOR THE DEFEAT

    Dinesh Friday, 18 March 2011 07:04 AM

' This time' ,that mean last time was it wrong?

    jayasiri Friday, 18 March 2011 07:43 AM

The UNP lost due to some unpers opting to always back the Western Interests regardless of what the consequences are.

They are still paying for what they said during the war: Thoppigala is a jungle, Alimankada and Pamankada, protesting against war and supporting LTTE with weapons and electronic equippments through wrong negotiations.

However, this government is now going corrupt in large scale.

    Rajapaksha Friday, 18 March 2011 07:44 AM

Just wondering what happened to UNP voters in Hambantota?

    Man B Friday, 18 March 2011 07:53 AM

    MK Friday, 18 March 2011 11:10 AM

Its a pity to the state the UNP has fallen in to. Never in History have they come to the third place. This time, ITAK has won LG bodies than the UNP this time.

    Neville Friday, 18 March 2011 11:47 AM

Nearly fifty percent has not voted. Who are they and why they have not voted.
Anyway cost of living will go up very soon.
